When the peloton pull on their national suits this Sunday at the World Championships, three of those riders come from the Riwal Securitas Cycling Team.
James Shaw and Nick van der Lijke are part of the large British and Dutch national squads, while Swedish Champion Lucas Eriksson represents his native country on his own.
While James Shaw and Lucas Eriksson will be riding free roles to aim for a personal result, Nick takes the role of domestique for the Dutch captains. “It’s an honor and a nice opportunity to support the guys as best as I can”, says Nick van der Lijke ahead of the race.
Nick suffered a crash last weekend as he helped Andreas Kron on his way to win the final stage of Tour de Luxembourg, but the Dutchman feels ready to help his orange team on Sunday. “I’m doing fine after the crash, and the body is getting better and better.”
Lucas Eriksson and James Shaw also both arrive at the Worlds after the just finished Tour de Luxembourg, and James looks towards the parcours in Imola to try and aim for a strong result. “My goal is to perform the best I can. It would be really good, if I could gain a good position for the final time into the climb and see where the legs are.”
“It’s a huge honor to be able to pull on the national jumper. Given all the lows of this year, it’s a highlight to the season for me”, says James Shaw.
The riders will be racing 258 kilometers on the hard lap in Imola, Italy, this coming Sunday, where two categorized climbs most definitely will be a tough challenge for all who wish to be the next in line to pull on the rainbow colors as the new World Champion.
