It was harsh weather in the true Belgian sense today on the way from Bruges to De Panne, with rain and heavy wind creating an extremely hard race on the otherwise flat Belgian roads.
Dutch rider Piotr Havik, who spent most of his previous race, Scheldeprijs, in the breakaway, showed his strength yet again today by sitting in the front group alongside all the pre-race favorites. With 36 kilometers to go though, he crashed and had to abandon the race.
“It was a tough race today”, says sports director Michael Skelde. “Every rider gave everything they had but unfortunately it wasn’t enough for a top result. I wouldn’t say that we’re satisfied with today; it would have been great to see how far Piotr could’ve come. We have to admit, that this today was a few levels above our capabilities right now.”
Only 49 riders finished todays last WorldTour classic of the 2020-season, while Tobias Mørch Kongstad was the only Riwal Securitas rider crossing the line in 45th position.
“This was our first and last race at this level for now. If we get to continue riding on the other side of the new year’s, I’m sure we’ll be able to grow and become better to contend for the top spots”, ends Michael Skelde.
