187 km in a 40 degree heat was what awaited the riders today in the first stage of the French race La Route d’Occitanie. Andreas Kron managed to attack in the early breakaway and gather enough points throughout the stage to take the lead in the mountain’s classification as well as the lead in the young rider classification while Dutch rider Nick van der Lijke finished 10th in the hectic bunch sprint.
“We’re very satisfied with today’s outcome”, says sports director Michael Blaudzun. “Andreas Kron is in very good shape, which he showed today in the breakaway. He took his chance and will now ride in the mountains jersey tomorrow”.
Kron rode off in the breakaway along with five other riders but was eventually caught around 15 km from the finish line, having reduced the group to just him and another rider. In the final kilometers, the bunch sprint got hectic and several crashes affected the final. Nick van der Lijke sprinted to 10th.
“We had a couple of riders who went down in the last kilometers, but luckily they didn’t suffer any serious injuries. Only some loss of skin. Nick took a surprising top 10, which shows his good form as well. All in all a good day in spite of the few crashes”, ends Michael Blaudzun.
