The young Danish time trial specialist Mathias Norsgaard has signed a deal with the Spanish WorldTour team Movistar, making him the third rider to be sent to the highest level of the sport from Riwal Readynez Cycling Team this season.
“It’s very exciting”, says Norsgaard about the transfer. “I don’t know for certain what world I’m about to enter, since I don’t have a reference for what life is like at the highest level, and then on a Spanish team - it can go both ways, but I’m looking forward to it.”
“It’s incredible to reach the top of the sport. It’s one thing to turn pro, but I’ve always wanted to climb further up the ladder. I wasn’t sure that was possible this year, since I’m not the most winning type of rider, but I’m happy to get the opportunity, and that Riwal was willing to repeal my contract.”
The just 22-year-old Dane has been one of the shiniest talents in Denmark for several years taking the bronze medal at the U23 World Championships time trial last year and winning first stage of this year’s Tour de l’Avenir.
“The plan is to use my power and pull in front. That’s what I’m good at and what we’ve focused on at Riwal Readynez”, says Norsgaard.
Though currently living in Girona, Spain, the young Dane has yet to learn the language of the locals but aims to invest more energy in mastering the preferred language of his new employer.
