It was a tough final at the day’s GP Industria & Artigianato with a race that was hardly controllable. With a goal of getting a rider in the top 20, the Riwal Readynez-riders did far beyond what was expected and placed two riders in the top 11 after a well raced final.
“We rode an amazing race today”, says directeur sportif Michael Skelde. “We agreed to skip the morning breakaway and fully focus on riding a good final, which we did. Luckily it started raining on the laps, and the strategy was to get Krister Hagen out in a breakaway if someone attacked on the second last time up the climb.”
Krister Hagen rode away with eight other riders from procontinental and WorldTour teams and got a solid lead of some 40 seconds over the bunch. The small remaining peloton didn’t seem to be able to establish a chase, until Mitchelton-Scott organized the group to pull Krister and the others back.
With a new situation of some 20 riders in front, two bridged a gap to the group and rode away with the win. In the sprint for third, Lucas and Krister ended up placing 10th and 11th on the day.
“We end up in a final where both Krister and Lucas are present, and with a bit more experience, we wouldn’t have been far away from the podium. But it’s pretty cool, that we can actually allow ourselves to be a bit disappointed even though we got two riders in the top 11. Had we done things a little differently, we could possibly have gone home with an even better result.”
“We just have to finetune some things, and I’m certain that even bigger results are waiting just around the corner”, ends Michael Skelde.
