After great teamwork through the 56 km half-stage this morning, Alexander Kamp finished the stage by yet again proving his strength on steep hills and closed 35 seconds to the breakaway to defend his jersey.
“We just about held on to the lead today”, says directeur sportif Michael Skelde. “We were under a lot of pressure, but we just have the strongest rider in the peloton. Everybody did their best to reel the breakaway back in, but with a kilometer to go, they still had 40 seconds on Alexander.”
“He just rode amazingly today. With the kilometer remaining on a steep hill, he did everything he could and closed 35 seconds by himself - hadn’t he done that, we wouldn’t be leading the race anymore.”
With one half-stage down, there’s still one to go this afternoon, when the riders take on 106 kilometers in the last effort of this year’s Circuit des Ardennes International.
“I believe we can take the win in the end. It’s going to be difficult, since it’s a hard stage awaiting, and it also depends on what the other teams are going to do. But I believe we can do it”, ends Michael Skelde.
