It was a tough last stage in Tour de Yorkshire and after taking matters into their own hands, Alexander Kamp just fell short of following Van Avermaet and Chris Lawless in the final, ending 7th on the day and 4th overall. The week of racing also resulted in a 2nd place in the team’s classification just behind Team INEOS (former Team Sky) and ahead of CCC Team.
With 40 kilometers to go the Riwal Readynez riders took control of the race and went all-in for the win. Within the final kilometers Greg van Avermaet and Chris Lawless attacked and got a break to Eddie Dunbar up the road taking 1st, 2nd and 3rd overall, leaving Kamp at 4th.
“If you want to win, you have to risk losing and that’s what we did. Unfortunately, in the end we lost, but I think we’ve won a lot during this race in terms of recognition and respect for our team”, says directeur sportif Michael Skelde. “We’ve become stronger as a team and I think a huge part of the cycling world have seen that the last couple of days.”
With loads of TV-time and hours in front of the peloton - and especially with a stage win yesterday, people noticed the presence of the team.
“On the way to the line Andreas Stokbro was told by many people, that they were impressed by our riding. We’ve really felt the respect around our team in these days and I’m very happy that we managed to deliver some good racing. We did what we could and got a lot of positive feedback from it.”
After racing hard at the front, Lucas Eriksson was nominated for the Dimension Data Digital Jersey award for most aggressive rider. A prize he won by the fan vote.
“First of all, huge kudos to Lucas for his work today in splitting the peloton on the hills. I think the award was a vote for the whole team - I could imagine many people have rooted for us in these days, being the small guy in the fight, and I think he won the award on behalf of the whole team effort, which is an amazing way to finish the race”, ends Michael Skelde.
