The Tour du Haut var is an early-season three-stage race in the Var department region in the south of France. The race has been held 1969 as a one-day race, but in 2009 it transformed to a 2.1 stage race, where it along with other February, French races Etoile de Bessèges, La Méditerranéen and Tour de la Provence is considered preparations for the first European World Tour stage race, the Paris-Nice.
Winners of the race include legends as Raymond Poulidor, Freddy Maertens, Sean Kelly and Laurent Jalabert. Joop Zoetemelk and Arthur Vichot holds the records of three wins in the race.
This year’s edition consists of three mountainous stages, where Riwal Readynez Cycling Team will face tough competition from World Tour teams such as Groupama - FDJ, AG2R La Mondiale, Trek - Segafredo and EF Education First, with Thibaut Pinot and Romain Bardet being some of the most notable contenders.
“I’m looking forward to getting started and racing with the boys to see where we stand”, says directeur sportif Michael Skelde, who’s racing his first race with the team. “We’re still in a process to find ourselves as a team, and it’ll be exciting to be a part of.”
“It’s going to be some tough days, and it’s hard to set specific goals. We have to be visible and ride some good races. We’re going to take one day at a time and see what we can make of it.”
