An old reinstated Italian stage race: Giro di Sicilia or Tour of Sicily. First race was held in 1907 but has only been ridden 23 times, last one in 1977. This year's resurrected race will be the 24th edition of a race that can boast of having Roger de Vlaeminck as a victor in 1974.
"We’re going into the race with confidence from last week’s racing in Coppi e Bartali - there’s no reason not to", says directeur sportif Michael Skelde. "We’re looking forward to new challenges. The hills are a bit longer than in Coppi e Bartali and so we have to see where we stand and how the teams are approaching it."
"Hopefully Sindre Lunke can go for a GC result where the Etna-stage will be defining - a spot in the top 20 would be a good result for us."
"Besides that, we’re going to seek our chances in the breakaways. The stages are hard, and they seem to be quite uncontrollable - so we’ll try to approach the race with an offensive mindset and ride some good races showing that we want to be there and participate. The greatest for us would be to take home a stage win", ends Michael Skelde.
Last year's winners:
The race was last ridden in 1977 where Giuseppe Saronni won.
