A Belgian race part of the Flanders Classics, it has been held since 1961. In 2005 it was introduced into the UCI Europe Tour as a 1.1 race, and was then upgraded to a 1.HC race in 2011.
Many huge stars in the cycling world have won this classic, including Freddy Maertens, Eddy Merckx, Roger de Vlaeminck, Johan Museeuw, Oscar Freire and Philippe Gilbert, while the rider who currently holds the record for most wins is Edwig van Hooydonck with four wins.
”It’s a race that we’ve really been looking forward to, and the one I personally have been looking forward to the most this spring”, says directeur sportif Michael Skelde. “It’s a fantastic race, and a race that really suits the quality of our riders, which means that we believe, we in this race have a fair chance to compare ourselves to some of the biggest teams in the world and some of the best riders. It’s going to be exciting to be allowed to go out in a direct competition with those teams.”
“As things are right now, if we have some wind in our sails and avoid bad luck, I believe that we can take part in the race and participate in the final. With what I’ve seen in the past week, I’d dare to say, that everything is possible.”
“There’s no reason to go out and say, that we’re just here to participate in the race, when we in fact are here to race a final and are aiming to do a top result. Alexander Kamp is super strong at the moment, and if he takes all the right decisions and does a good race, I think he has a chance at winning this race."
